Hi Abigail,
I believe they can. They hunt nocturnally, and you will notice that in the dark (or if you turn on a light in a darkened room) a cat that has been in the dark for a few moments will have huge black irises. The same thing happens to us when we are in the dark. Our irises increase in size (less than cats) to let in more light, and as they adjust to the dark , we begin to see shapes. The longer we are in the dark, the more we will see (up to a point).
Because a cat's iris will fill its entire eye, it sees far more in the dark than we can, and adequately enough to react quickly to chase, hunt and catch prey.
Keeping your cat inside at night and early morning will prevent it from killing many creatures.
